SWDYT of IM?

Through the ages man has developed ways to communicate. These ways have included gestures, speech, drawing in the dirt or on cave walls, drums, dance, the written word, telex, fax, and the cell phone.

The current method of choice is the cell phone. It allows the user to talk, send text messages, pictures, and videos. Texting has become the most popular but the tiny keyboards are not conducive to long messages. Therefore, born out of necessity, are abbreviations that the texter uses to speed up the messaging. Above is a periodic table that lists some of the more common abbreviations. There are also a number of website dedicated to compiling these abbreviations.

  2. The first blog that I reviewed was written by Carolyn Richardson. This blog is about the language of texting and IM-ing, which I have to admit that this is something that I know very little about. When it comes to the world of instant messaging and texting this is a growing trend among almost everyone who owns a computer or cell phone or at least has access to these items. The acronyms provided in the table of instant messaging are confusing to me but may not be for someone who is familiar with this. Carolyn also spoke of her job as a research data coordinator for a specified company and how the pop culture is involved in that title; which this is one job that I can see how pop culture is incorporated into without reading that section of the blog. Carolyn goes in depth on how important the current trends and fads about weight loss and what’s in to eat affect how she does her job and what it consists of when it comes to item importance with a specific age grouped client. I think that Carolyn did a wonderful job with her blog. I found it very informative and unique.
